Roof Repair — Leaks, Storm Damage & Shingle Repair Across Central Alabama

Commercial roofing contractors installing a TPO membrane roof on a building in the Birmingham metro, Alabama

Prime Roofing & Restoration repairs roofs across the Birmingham metro and Central Alabama — leaks, storm damage, missing shingles, failed flashing and rotted decking. Free inspections, written scope with photographs, and an honest answer on whether you need a repair or a replacement.

Wind and hail account for nearly 45% of all homeowners’ insurance claims nationwide. In Central Alabama that share runs higher, which means a lot of what looks like a repair job is actually an insurance job — and knowing which one you have changes what it costs you.

Where Roof Leaks Actually Start

The single most useful thing to understand about a roof leak: the stain on your ceiling is almost never under the hole.Water enters at a breach, runs along the underside of the decking or down a rafter, and drops through at the lowest point it finds. That can be ten feet from the entry.

This is why patching where the water appears usually fails. In order of how often we find them, here is where leaks genuinely begin:

  1. Flashing. Around chimneys, skylights, vents and in valleys. Flashing is the most common leak source on almost every roof, and it fails long before the shingles do.
  2. Pipe boots. The rubber collar around plumbing vents cracks in Alabama sun, typically at 10 to 15 years. Cheap to fix, and it causes a startling amount of interior damage when ignored.
  3. Wind-lifted shingles. A shingle can break its seal without going anywhere. It looks fine from the ground and lets water under on the next driving rain.
  4. Valleys. Where two roof planes meet, water volume concentrates. Debris builds up, then dams.
  5. Nail pops. Fasteners backing out through the shingle, each one a small hole.

Signs You Have a Problem Before It Leaks

  • Granules collecting in gutters and at downspout outlets
  • Shingles curling or cupping at the edges
  • Dark streaks or soft spots visible from the ground
  • Daylight through the roof boards in the attic
  • A sagging line anywhere along the roof plane

That last one is different from the rest. A sag means a structural or decking problem rather than a surface one, and it should be looked at promptly.

Repairs We Handle

Roof Leak Repair

We trace the leak to its entry point rather than patching where the water shows. That usually means getting into the attic as well as onto the roof, because the path water takes is the whole diagnosis.

Shingle Repair and Replacement

Missing, cracked, curled or wind-lifted shingles. Matching matters — shingle lines get discontinued, and a repair that does not match is a repair you see from the street. We will tell you upfront if matching is not possible. See asphalt shingles.

Flashing and Pipe Boot Repair

The most common real cause of leaks, and among the least expensive to fix if caught before the decking is wet. Chimneys, skylights, vents, valleys and wall junctions.

Decking Repair

When water has been getting in for a while, the plywood underneath is soft. We replace what is rotted rather than shingling over it, which is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that fails in a season.

Storm Damage Repair

Hail and wind damage frequently runs through insurance rather than out of pocket. If a storm came through, get it documented before you decide — see storm damage repair and insurance claims assistance.

Emergency Repair

Active leak right now? Emergency roofing covers same-day tarping and water intrusion control.

Repair or Replace?

The honest version:

  • Repair usually makes sense when the damage is localized to one slope, the roof is under about 15 years old, and the decking is dry.
  • Replacement usually makes sense when damage spans multiple slopes, the roof is at or past its rated life, shingles cannot be matched, or there are already two layers up there.
  • It is genuinely a judgment call in between — and that is where you want photographs and a written scope rather than a verbal opinion. See roof replacement if that is the direction.

We inspect free and show you what we found. If a repair will buy you five more years, we will say so.

Where We Work

Across the Birmingham metro and Central Alabama, including Birmingham, Hoover, Alabaster, Pelham, Helena and Vestavia Hills. On the Gulf Coast we cover Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Foley from our Orange Beach office.

What Fails First, and Where

The same roof fails differently depending on which side of Alabama it sits on.

Birmingham metro. Heat, humidity and spring hail. Granule loss runs fastest on south and west-facing slopes with poor attic ventilation, and the older tree canopy in Bluff Park and the established Shelby County neighborhoods drops debris into valleys, which dams water and rots decking from above. Steep lots on Shades Mountain and the Oak Mountain ridges also mean access and staging cost more than the square footage suggests.

Baldwin County and the Gulf Coast. Salt air corrodes fasteners and flashing long before sun degrades the shingles, so coastal repairs are usually metal-first: pipe boots, drip edge, valley flashing and nail heads. Humidity feeds algae that holds moisture against the surface. And every few years a named storm finds whatever was already weak.

Knowing which pattern you are dealing with is most of an accurate diagnosis, and it is the reason we inspect from the attic as well as the roof.

Roof Types and Materials

Why Homeowners Call Us for Roof Repair

  • We find the actual leak. Attic and roof, tracing the water path rather than patching where the stain is. Most callbacks we get are on repairs somebody else guessed at.
  • 300+ five-star reviews and an A+ BBB rating. Accredited since 2019, Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board #30275.
  • We will tell you when it is not worth repairing. And when it is. A repair that buys five years is a good repair; one that buys six months is a waste of your money.
  • Photographs and a written scope. You see what we saw before you decide anything.
  • Local, and here for the warranty. Offices in Alabaster and Orange Beach. See our client testimonials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the water stain not under the hole in my roof?

Because water travels. It enters at a breach, runs along the underside of the decking or down a rafter, and drops through at the lowest point it reaches — which can be several feet from where it got in. This is the single most common reason a patch fails: it was placed where the stain was rather than where the leak is.

How much does roof repair cost?

It depends on what failed and how long water has been getting in. A cracked pipe boot is a small job. A valley leak that has been soaking the decking through a season is not, because the plywood has to come out too. We inspect free and give you a written number before any work starts.

Should I repair or replace my roof?

Repair usually makes sense when damage is on one slope, the roof is under about 15 years old, and the decking is dry. Replacement makes more sense when damage spans multiple slopes, the roof is at the end of its rated life, shingles cannot be matched, or there are already two layers. In between it is a judgment call, which is why you want photographs rather than a verbal opinion.

Can you match my existing shingles?

Often, but not always. Shingle lines get discontinued, and colors weather over time so even the same product will not match a 12-year-old roof exactly. We will tell you before the work starts whether the repair will be visible from the street, so you can decide.

How long does a roof repair take?

Most repairs are a few hours to a day. Repairs involving decking replacement or multiple leak sources can run to two days. Weather drives the schedule more than anything else — we will not open a roof ahead of a storm.

Will my insurance cover a roof repair?

If the damage came from a covered event like hail or wind, usually yes. Wear and tear and deferred maintenance are not covered. Wind and hail account for nearly 45% of homeowners’ claims nationwide, so it is worth having the damage documented before assuming you are paying out of pocket.

What if I only see a leak when it rains hard?

That usually points to wind-driven rain getting under a lifted shingle or through a flashing detail that only fails at a certain angle. It is a real leak and it will get worse. Intermittent leaks are harder to trace, which is why we look at the attic side as well as the roof.

Do you offer free roof inspections?

Yes, including the photographs and written scope. If we find the roof is fine, we will tell you that too.
