Storm & Hail Damage Roof Repair — Birmingham Metro & Central Alabama

Commercial roofing contractors installing a TPO membrane roof on a building in the Birmingham metro, Alabama

Central Alabama sits in Dixie Alley, and most roofs here take hail or straight-line wind at some point. Prime Roofing & Restoration handles storm damage repair across the Birmingham metro and Central Alabama, including the insurance claim that usually comes with it. Free inspections, documented for your adjuster.

The hard part is not the repair. It is that most storm damage does not look like damage from the ground, and most policies have a filing deadline that closes before homeowners realize anything happened.

What Hail Damage Actually Looks Like

Hail damage is rarely visible from the driveway. These are the signs that matter:

  • Granules in gutters and downspouts. The most reliable early indicator. Hail knocks the protective granules off the shingle surface, and they wash into the gutters.
  • Dents in soft metals. Check gutters, downspouts, vents, flashing and any metal fascia. If hail dented the metal, it hit the shingles too.
  • Dark bruised spots on shingles. Circular marks where the granules have been knocked away, exposing the black asphalt underneath.
  • Cracked or split shingles. Larger hail splits shingles outright, often along the seal line.
  • A soft, spongy feel underfoot. A roofer will notice this before you do. It indicates the mat beneath the shingle has been bruised.

Wind damage looks different. Look for shingles lifted or curled at the edges, missing shingles in patches rather than singly, and debris impact marks. Wind that lifts a shingle breaks its seal even when the shingle stays in place, which is why a roof can fail in the next ordinary rainstorm.

How Storm Damage Repair Works

  1. Free inspection. We get on the roof, photograph everything, and tell you whether there is enough damage to justify a claim. Sometimes the answer is no, and we will say so.
  2. Temporary protection if needed. If water is getting in, emergency tarping goes on the same visit. Stopping the water is a separate job from fixing the roof and it should not wait.
  3. Documented damage report. Photographs, measurements and a written scope in the format adjusters expect.
  4. We meet your adjuster. Being on the roof at the same time as the adjuster is the single biggest factor in whether a claim covers the actual scope of work.
  5. Repair or replacement. Full tear-off where the damage warrants it, targeted repair where it does not, to manufacturer specification and local code.
  6. Final walkthrough. Magnet sweep of the property and a check that everything on the scope was completed.

Storm Damage Insurance Claims

Most homeowner policies treat hail and wind as an act of nature rather than homeowner fault, which is a different category from a liability claim. Three things decide whether a claim goes well:

  • Timing. Policies have filing deadlines, and they close sooner than most people expect. Get the roof inspected after a storm even if you are undecided about filing.
  • Documentation. Photographs taken before any repair work begins. Adjusters ask for them and their absence weakens the claim.
  • Scope. First offers frequently miss damage. When that happens we file a supplement with the evidence rather than asking you to negotiate it yourself.

More detail on our insurance claims assistance page. If the damage warrants a full replacement, see roof replacement. If water is coming in right now, go to emergency roofing.

Where We Respond

A hail swath crosses several cities in the same twenty minutes, so we work the whole metro after a storm event — Alabaster, Hoover, Pelham, Helena, Birmingham, Vestavia Hills and Chelsea. We also run a second office on the Gulf Coast at 25299 Canal Rd Suite B-7 in Orange Beach, covering Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Foley, where the exposure is hurricane and salt air rather than hail.

Two Storm Seasons, Two Offices

Central Alabama and the Gulf Coast take different storms, and we cover both from separate offices.

Inland — the Birmingham metro. Dixie Alley brings hail and straight-line wind, mostly March through May. Damage here is usually invisible from the ground: bruised shingles, granules in the gutters, dented soft metals. We work this from our Alabaster office on Brown Circle, out along I-459 and the US-31 and Highway 280 corridors. Check whether a storm tracked over your address through National Weather Service Birmingham.

Coastal — Baldwin County. Named storms and hurricanes, and a slower kind of damage the rest of the year as salt air corrodes fasteners and flashing. We work the coast from our Orange Beach office at 25299 Canal Rd, up the Foley Beach Express to Foley and out along Highway 59. Baldwin County is covered by National Weather Service Mobile, not Birmingham — worth knowing when you are checking storm reports for a claim.

Call (205) 661-8190 inland or (251) 210-2671 on the coast.

Roof Replacement Readiness Checker — Prime Roofing & Restoration

Is Your Roof Due for Replacement?

Four questions, about thirty seconds. Built for Alabama roofs.

How old is your roof?

If you are not sure, the year you bought the house is usually a reasonable guess.

What is the roof made of?

Most Alabama homes have asphalt shingles. Three-tab shingles look flat and uniform; architectural shingles look thicker and layered.

What are you seeing?

Select everything that applies. If none apply, continue without selecting.

Has a storm come through recently?

Hail and straight-line wind are the most common causes of Alabama roof claims, and damage is often invisible from the ground.

Why Alabama Homeowners Call Us After a Storm

  • We were here before the storm and we will be here after. Our office is on Brown Circle in Alabaster and we have been BBB accredited since 2019. Out-of-state crews follow hail events and leave before warranty claims come due.
  • 300+ five-star reviews and an A+ BBB rating. Customers most often mention the insurance help and one-day installs.
  • We meet the adjuster on the roof. Not a phone call afterward. Being present during the inspection is what keeps damage from being missed.
  • We will tell you when there is no claim. If the damage does not justify filing, we say so. A denied claim on your record helps nobody.
  • Licensed and insured in Alabama. Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board #30275. Ask anyone who knocks on your door after a storm for theirs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does hail damage look like on a roof?

Granules collecting in gutters and downspouts, dents in gutters, vents and other soft metals, dark circular bruises where granules have been knocked off the shingle, and cracked or split shingles. Most of it is not visible from the ground, which is why hail damage frequently goes unnoticed until the roof starts leaking months later.

How long do I have to file a hail damage claim in Alabama?

Filing deadlines are set by your individual policy rather than by state law, and they are often shorter than homeowners expect. Some policies require notice within a year of the date of loss. Check your policy, and get the roof inspected soon after a storm even if you have not decided whether to file.

Will filing a storm damage claim raise my premium?

Storm and hail claims are generally treated as acts of nature rather than homeowner fault, which is a different category from a liability claim. Rates can still move for other reasons, including area-wide adjustments after a major event. Ask your agent about your specific policy before filing.

My insurance offer does not cover the full repair. What now?

First offers frequently miss damage, particularly on secondary items like flashing, vents and decking. When that happens we file a supplement with photographs and measurements supporting the additional scope. That is a normal part of the process, not a dispute, and it is our job rather than yours.

Do I need a full replacement or just a repair?

It depends on how widely the damage is spread and how old the roof is. Localized wind damage on one slope is usually repairable. Hail across multiple slopes, or damage to a roof already near the end of its life, generally justifies replacement. We show you the photos and explain which situation you are in.

Can hail damage a metal roof?

Yes. Metal roofs resist puncture far better than asphalt, but hail can dent panels and damage the protective coating, which leads to corrosion at the impact points. Cosmetic dent coverage varies significantly between policies, so it is worth checking yours specifically.

Should I let a roofer who knocked on my door inspect my roof?

Be cautious. After a major hail event, out-of-state crews move into the area, sign as many contracts as they can, and leave before warranty claims come due. Ask for an Alabama license number, check whether the company has a local address and a review history that predates the storm, and never sign anything that commits you before your claim is approved.

What does a storm damage inspection cost?

Nothing. Our inspections are free, and that includes the documentation you would need for a claim. If we find the damage does not justify filing, we will tell you that too.
